Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

Thomas

My name is Thomas Ribéreau.
I was born and grew up in Normandy.
Today, I live between Boulogne-Billancourt and Normandy with my wife, Julie, and my two children, Emile and Hélène.

What path led you to Argos and the position you hold today?

Thomas

After studying at the Ecole Centrale Paris, I lived for 2.5 years in New York, first as a student getting a M.Sc. in Management Science & Engineering from Columbia University and then as a fund manager assistant in a hedge fund at AXA IM.

Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, I then decided to get back to France and to my initial desire to work in private equity, energetically supporting companies as an active investor.

Is this the path you thought you would take when you started your studies?

Thomas

I heard about private equity for the first time during the preparatory classes for my engineering school exam and was immediately taken in by this profession, by learning about many diverse markets and companies from people who use their wide variety of experiences to support ambitious projects. So I then focussed my studies to prepare myself.

The world of private equity has changed a lot in recent years. What is your definition of PE? How do you see it?

Thomas

Companies are a key component of our ecosystem. They are at the heart of our economy. They are essential to its balance, and they drive growth. They can also bring about changes in the way we live, behave and consume. Besides, being the son and grandson of entrepreneurs, I am convinced that these companies – and small and mid-sized companies in particular – need capital and human support to develop faster and better.

Private equity means partnering with companies and investing capital in them to support their ambitious development plans. We are on their side, helping them to grow further, faster and better. Successful PE investments are only possible when our portfolio companies get to position themselves on a sustainable growth trend. That is what drives me in my work.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Thomas

My family gets me out of bed, both literally (speaking of my kids) and figuratively, as I mostly focus on securing our future.

What encounter - or moment - has marked your journey at Argos?

Thomas

The day we sell the shares we own in a company always leaves a mark. We look back at what has been accomplished since we first came to understand the company, its market and the people behind it. We are actually supporting the company one last time in finding the right partner for the next phase.

To describe yourself further: It is said that we are the average of the people we meet. Who do you think they are and how do they influence you?

Thomas

I like this idea. What is great about private equity is that it is a privileged position for meeting inspiring people and experts in very diverse areas and industries. I feel like I am challenged and learning every single day, and I love it.

You interact daily with managers. Is there an entrepreneur you admire in the market? In a more general way, is there a person you admire, who inspires you on a daily basis? (e.g. writer, artist, politician, etc.)

Thomas

I admire many people for diverse reasons but no public personalities in particular. I am lucky enough to have them as family members, friends or managers/entrepreneurs I have actually met or worked with. I look for inspiration from as many people as possible, as I believe I can be inspired and learn from anybody.

” Private equity means partnering with companies and investing capital in them to support their ambitious development plans.“

How do you find balance in your life as a whole?

Thomas

Thanks to my wife and my kids who keep reminding me what is important.

And thanks to a lot of yoga.

Outside of your job, what are your passions or commitments?

Thomas

Aside from taking care of and having fun with my family and friends and playing sports (yoga, kitesurfing, etc.), I spend time developing my own projects.

How do you see yourself in 10 years?

Thomas

Have you already seen a business plan that is executed as planned?

Do you have a place to share with us that reflects you? A place that inspires you and contributes to your balance?

Thomas

My heart would naturally go to my place in Normandy, but more generally, I love rainy countryside, even more so by the water, as on the Normandy coast or in Scotland. Bad weather keeps people closer to each other, and I like the peaceful strength it carries.

In another life, you would be...?

Thomas

A surgeon or a cook – both jobs require working with precision. They both help people or give them pleasure.
